Ashgrove Studio opened in 2014 in a former cotton warehouse on Oconee Street, with a bench, a bandsaw and a borrowed kiln. The owner, Mara Ellison, trained as an architect and spent six years drawing rooms for other people's furniture before deciding to make the furniture instead. Today the studio is two makers and an apprentice, one kiln that is no longer borrowed, and a showroom at the front where finished pieces sit until they are collected. Drawn before it is cut
Every piece starts as a scaled drawing you approve, with the wood, the joinery and the price written down.
Made by the person you spoke to
The maker who draws your piece is the maker who builds it. There is no sales desk between you and the bench.
Built to be repaired
Finishes that can be touched up at home, joinery that can be re-glued in fifty years, and a card under every piece that says what it is made of.
The studio
The studio is one long room: rough boards and the kiln at the back, benches and machines in the middle, and a showroom at the front with north light. Visitors are welcome on Saturday mornings, and by appointment during the week to see a piece in progress.
